Hempseed, the Superfood.

With all this recent talk about cancer causing foods like meat and such, it seems like all the “fun food” is bad for us.

Hempseed, however, is one of the “fun food” good guys.

Besides being really tasty, the nutrient composition of hempseed is staggeringly good for your heart, insulin balance, immune system, skin and joints.

Hempseed is 80% essential fatty acids making it one of the richest sources. Especially advantageous is the ratio of amino acids linoleic acid (LA) and linolenic acid (LNA), which is said by nutritionalists to be optimal at 3:1. In addition, the presents of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) makes it a superstar of nutritional value. Omega acids 6, 3 & 9 plus GLA rules out any other single food as a comparable nutritional powerhouse.

What’s so great about essential fatty acids?

They’re the 9 fatty acids, of the 20 amino fatty acids that make up a complete protein, that the body cannot produce.

Therefore the 9 essential fatty acids must be ingested to maintain health.

So both the complete protein and the essential oils contained in the hemp seeds are in ideal ratios for human nutrition.

What’s most unique about hempseed is the composition of the protein in it.

65% is in the form of globulin edestin, meaning edible. (1) The high edestine content of hempseed combined with albumin, another globular protein contained in seeds, allows the body to create disease fighting immunoglobulins, like human serum albumin and serum globulins like gamma globulin antibodies. These are essential for a healthy immune system. As well, this form of protein is easily tolerated by the body as the globular proteins are similar to blood.

How to get it?

There are many ways to get the goodness out of hempseed.

Besides hemp oil, seeds can be used to make hemp milk (see below for a couple places to go for recipes), ground into flour or made into cereals, granola bars, etc.

Practicality

It’s so easy to grow; history tells of the Australians surviving two prolonged famines in the early 1800’s using almost nothing but hempseed for protein and leaves for roughage. (1)

While all this nutritional news is fine and dandy, the implication of hemp is far more reaching than the Vitamix blender on the kitchen counter (okay, mine’s a Kitchen Aid).

With more than half the world on the brink of starvation most of the time, a small amount of hemp seed in a persons diet can make a huge difference during food shortages.

A new day

As we walk into a new era of sensibility and sustainability, we could only hope governments don't continue making benign substances like hemp illegal.  This would be good news for a fledging world economy, one that has been choked with laws, and therefore economies, all the while ignoring science.

It’s simple and I’m not going to sugar coat it: People around the world have been starving because governments will not allow full on hemp production. Time to get real.
